EDITING
FAITH LAWN TURNAROUND
EDITING PROCESS ➡️
This is my most recent long form edit. The story of a struggling business in Michigan, shot by my co-worker and I. Click the link to the far right to watch the full video on youtube. I provided a summary of my editing process and below are a couple post-production processes I use to give my long and short form edits structure and purpose.
-
Edit base of story into blocks and arrange into a story arc
-
Add music, adjust/edit audio and patch audio cuts
-
Write studio script for Mike to condense or bridge segments in the story arc
-
Add b-roll contextually over story
-
Team watch through/critique
-
Massage the story according to critiques
-
Add graphics, create thumbnail and post

POST PRODUCTION
PROCESS ➡️
Main take aways: The owner applied to the turnaround show to seek help with cash flow issues. He is $500k in debt, has 15 guys, 4 branches, with no manager outside of himself. He invited Mike out to shine a light on a path forward. The solutions were to raise pricing for mowing (it was way too low), add fees for late payments, collect receivables ASAP (-$185k) and open the books to his team to rally behind him.
Additional problems: An employee was fired that morning & he threatened to sue. They lost a commercial mowing contract which would result in immediate lay-offs. The team wasn't told about us coming out to film.
-
Organize files and sync footage to audio
-
Label every section of the story by custom color code
-
Post-shoot audio recap & testimonial to front of timeline
-
Cut and organize b-roll selects into related sections
-
Collect additional footage and information on the business
-
Duplicate timeline and place into a chop sequence to cut, copy and paste significant moments for introduction
-
Hand off files to an editor or begin the editing process

EDIT TIMELINE
SHORT FORM CONTENT
-

-
Character + context of problem.
-
Ideally a concluding statement or solution.
-
Intriguing title, captions and graphics. Custom #s for SEO.
Below are a few stories put into 60 second. The main goal of these is to drive traffic to original video and ultimately the channel. The majority of all edits are seen and critiqued by at least 3 people on the team.

FORMULAS
-
Context Lean: Visual Context + Hook
-
Scroll Stop Interjection: Contrasting Work (Stun Them)
-
Curiosity Loop: Contrarian Snapback/ Change Directions.
Start by referencing common ground of the viewer and either lead with a pain point or a benefit. The visual hook should give context to the video and have a slight compelling motion.
